Mastering Color Scales for Design Systems

Building accessible, cohesive design systems requires more than a single brand color. Product teams rely on complete monochromatic scales to designate visual hierarchy—using soft tints for background callouts, mid-tones for secondary badges, and deep shades for active button presses.

Key Capabilities & Features

  • Complete Tri-Scale Generation: Generates Tints (+white), Shades (+black), and Tones (+gray) simultaneously from any starting color.
  • Interactive Click-to-Copy: Click any color rectangle to instantly copy its HEX string to your clipboard.
  • Adjustable Step Granularity: Choose between 10, 15, or 20 step increments for customized palette depth.
  • CSS Custom Property Export: Generates clean :root { --color-tint-1: ... } snippets for easy integration.

Step-by-Step How It Works

  1. Pick your base brand color with the native picker or type a HEX code.
  2. Choose the number of intervals (10 is standard).
  3. Browse the resulting tints, shades, and tones.
  4. Click to copy individual hex values or export the full CSS variable bundle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Linear interpolation (lerp) is performed across each RGB channel. For tints, each channel is interpolated toward 255: Channel_new = Channel + (255 - Channel) * factor. For shades, each channel is interpolated toward 0: Channel_new = Channel * (1 - factor).

Tints make a color brighter and more pastel. Tones mix in neutral gray, which softens a vibrant hue without drastically changing its lightness, making tones ideal for subtle, non-distracting borders, card outlines, and neutral cards.

As a general rule, use dark charcoal or black text on light tints (10% to 60%), and crisp white text on deeper shades (50% to 100%). Use our companion Contrast Checker tool to verify a 4.5:1 ratio for normal body copy.
