Google Material Design Guidelines for Dark Themes
Designing a comfortable dark mode is not as simple as taking a white background and inverting it to #000000. Pure black backgrounds cause high-contrast eye fatigue, text halation (blurring of glowing white letters), and harsh visual boundaries.
1. Desaturate Colors
Fully saturated colors vibrate against dark backgrounds and fail WCAG contrast ratios. Google recommends toning down saturation to 40%–60% and lifting lightness above 60%.
2. Surface Elevation
In light mode, elevation is represented with shadows. In dark mode, cast shadows are invisible, so elevated surfaces (cards, modals) are represented with incrementally lighter gray overlay tints (5%–12% white).
3. Avoid Pure White Text
Pure white (#FFFFFF) text on dark backgrounds causes optical halation. High-emphasis body text should use an off-white opacity of 87% (e.g. #F1F5F9), and secondary text 60%.
