What is the Online DNS & CNAME Record Lookup Tool?
The NexTools DNS & CNAME Record Lookup is an ultrafast web utility that allows developers, systems engineers, and domain administrators to resolve and inspect DNS resource records directly from their web browser. Utilizing high-performance, encrypted DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) endpoints provided by Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8), the tool bypasses local ISP DNS caches to return authentic, authoritative upstream records.
With full support for A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SOA, and CAA records, you can effortlessly verify domain ownership tokens (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365), debug email routing issues (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and check CDN or reverse proxy CNAME mappings.
Supported DNS Record Types
CNAME (Canonical Name)
Aliases one domain name to another canonical hostname (e.g. mapping www.domain.com to domains.customcdn.com).
A & AAAA Records
Maps hostnames to 32-bit IPv4 addresses (e.g. 192.0.2.1) and 128-bit IPv6 addresses (e.g. 2001:db8::1).
MX (Mail Exchange)
Directs incoming emails to mail servers responsible for the domain, ranked by priority values.
TXT & Verification Records
Contains human-readable and machine-readable text used for SPF authentication, DKIM public keys, and DMARC enforcement policies.
Step-by-Step: How to Query DNS Records Online
- Enter your domain or subdomain: Type the hostname into the domain input box (e.g.,
example.comorsub.example.com). Protocol prefixes (http://orhttps://) and trailing slashes are automatically trimmed. - Select the record filter: Choose a specific record type (like
CNAMEorTXT) or selectALLto query all primary resource records concurrently. - Choose your DoH resolver: Toggle between Cloudflare DNS and Google Public DNS to check multi-resolver consensus.
- Click "Lookup DNS Records": View status codes (NOERROR, NXDOMAIN), TTL expiration counters, and target values. Copy individual values or the full JSON response.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH)?
DNS-over-HTTPS is a networking security protocol for performing remote Domain Name System resolution via the HTTPS protocol. It prevents eavesdropping and manipulation of DNS data by encrypting queries between your browser and the DoH resolver.
Why can't I set a CNAME record at the zone apex (root domain)?
Per RFC 1912 section 2.4, a CNAME record cannot coexist with other records for the same name. Since the root of a domain (e.g. example.com) must possess SOA and NS records, an apex CNAME is prohibited. DNS providers work around this using CNAME Flattening or ALIAS/ANAME records.
What does TTL mean in DNS records?
TTL stands for Time to Live (measured in seconds). It tells downstream recursive DNS resolvers and caching servers how long they should keep the record stored locally before querying the authoritative nameserver again.
What does NXDOMAIN mean?
NXDOMAIN (Non-Existent Domain) is a DNS response code indicating that the domain name queried does not exist according to the authoritative nameserver.
