Why PBKDF2 Thwarts Password Cracking Clusters
Standard cryptographic hash functions (such as MD5 and SHA-256) are engineered to be extremely fast for data integrity verification, allowing attackers using specialized GPU arrays to compute billions of guesses per second.
PBKDF2 is intentionally designed to be computationally expensive (slow). By forcing a computer to calculate 100,000+ sequential rounds of HMAC, it elevates the cost of brute-forcing to make large-scale offline dictionary attacks economically unfeasible.
