What is Plain Text Justification?
Full justification aligns both the left and right margins of a paragraph evenly. While modern word processors (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs) justify text using proportional font kerning, plain-text environments (such as terminal consoles, source code docstrings, and markdown files) require monospace character spacing.
The Text Justifier & Column Formatter calculates word lengths, wraps lines to your exact column target (such as the standard 72 or 80-character terminal width), and calculates optimal inter-word space distribution so your output looks like a polished, professional newspaper column in plain ASCII text.
Standard Column Width Guide
| Column Width | Standard Use Case | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 40–50 Characters | Mobile displays, narrow sidebars, printed receipts | Prevents horizontal scrolling on small screens. |
| 60–72 Characters | Plain text emails (RFC 5322), Markdown documentation | Optimal psychological eye-tracking comfort for reading long paragraphs. |
| 80 Characters | UNIX terminal consoles, Python PEP 8, GitHub commits | Historic punch-card & terminal standard; ensures code reviews fit in dual split panes. |
| 100–120 Characters | Wide monitors, code editor landscape views | Ideal for wide tables and horizontal data schemas. |
